Old Point Loma Lighthouse and Cabrillo National Monument

Today we went to the Old Point Loma Lighthouse and Cabrillo National Monument. This is operated by the U.S. National Parks Service and the entrance fee is only $5 per car. If you have a National Park pass you can use it for entry. The park closes at 5pm sharp so I suggest you get there in plenty of time to have at least 2 hours to see everything.  This is really one of the best places to see the whole San Diego Harbor and the pacific ocean.

Tide Pools
First we checked the low tide chart so we knew we would be there when the tide pools were visible. This was one of the best parts of the trip and the kids had a great time exploring the tidal zone and splashing in the waves.

Fort Rosecrans Battery
Once a month the historic Fort Rosecrans Battery is open to the public. This is a 1943 military look out bunker hidden in the hillside where U.S. military troops would keep watch over the Pacific ocean 24/7 on 12 hour shifts. Originally there were 28 bunkers up and down the San Diego coast line but this is the only one left. One of the highlights of the trip and a pleasant surprise. Well worth the trip and very educational.
